Abstract:
This article shows the extent to which Nigerian Pidgin interferences affect the written expressions of Spanish language learners in Nigeria. It hinges on the systematic content analysis of a corpus of 80 essay scripts generated by third and fourth year university students from the University of Calabar. The paper demonstrates that lexico-semantic and morpho-syntactic interferences are among the principal causes of errors in the use of the Spanish language by Nigerian learners. The paper concludes that Nigerian pidgin is a threat – or rather a serious obstacle – to the correct use and learning, not only of the English language, but also of other foreign languages taught in Nigeria.
